JReleaser 2: The Road Ahead

The time has come. After a bit more than 4 years working in the 1.x series (see Release History), it's time to switch gears and begin work on the 2.x release train. JReleaser main has been branched into development-2.x and work on the next set of features has begun. We're quite grateful to every one that has contributed to the project so far, and look forward to new contributions.

Here's what to expect in the coming weeks:

  • a new rolling release, 2.0.0-SNAPSHOT, where all changes pertaining to the 2.x series will be posted. The early-access release remains pointing to 1.x in case updates to the 1.x are needed.
  • Bytecode level compatibility will be updated to Java 25 as a minimum.
  • Dependencies that raised their bytecode compatibility from Java 8 to higher, such as JGit and Tika, will be upgraded as well.
  • OSX Intel artifacts will no longer be published. GitHub will remove hosted runners for macos-intel soon, GraalVM will also stop supporting this platform combination.
  • Remove all deprecations.
  • Raise Gradle compatibility to Gradle 9 as a minimum.

Keep an eye on the list of breaking changes. Pay attention to deprecation notices when running JReleaser 1.x and adjust your configuration accordingly.

As always, feedback is welcomed, feel free to file a ticket or start a discussion topic.

Keep on coding!
